Thurgoona is a thriving suburb of Albury situated northeast of the city and is made up of a number of estates, including recent new developments emerging due to the councils change in zoning from rural to residential. These include The Elms, Mitchell Park, Kerrford Rise, Spring Park, St Johns Green, St Johns Hill, Thurgoona Park, St Hillaire, Corrys Wood, Fairway Gardens & Huntingdale Estates.
Contributing to the growth of Thurgoona is the New and expanding Charles Sturt University. The classes have moved from central Albury to the new facilities. The new Dentistry & Oral Health facility was completed in late 2010.
There are 3 local schools now including the Thurgoona Public school, Border Christian College and Trinity Anglican College. Bus services are available to most of the other schools in the area.
2010 brought another benefit to the community in the form of a larger shopping centre with Woolworths supermarkets as a major tenant together with a number of specialty shops including a butcher, baker, 2 cafes, pizza, Thai restaurant/takeaway, chemist, Hume building Society, newsagent, hair salon and more.
The famous Kinross Woolshed is a country icon and a great place to relax and unwind in the old converted sheering shed. The atmosphere is excellent and provides many local and national big name bands featuring the likes of former local identity Lee Kernigan, Shannon Noll, Jimmy Barnes to name a few.
Thurgoona is also a halfway point between Albury and the Hume Weir which at full capacity is said to be 6 times the size of Sydney harbour. Situated on the Murray River, this is a huge playground for recreational fishing, swimming and waterskiing.
