Did you know that Albury was once in contention to become Australia's national capital?
The reasons why are easy to understand. After all, Albury sits at the epicentre of the Sydney-Melbourne-Adelaide triangle where 75% of all Australians live. Another attraction is the region's distinctive natural beauty, with the majestic Murray winding through alpine terrain to the east and fertile river plains to the west.
Living in Albury today means enjoying not only this stunning natural setting but also all the amenities of a thriving modern city.
A Vibrant City
Located in Wiradjuri country and covering 306.7 km2, Albury has a bustling economy, world-class medical and health services, a vibrant cultural and artistic scene, sporting facilities to rival those of the capital cities, and seemingly endless leisure and recreation options.
The city has a cosmopolitan feel that reflects a unique multicultural heritage. Our Indigenous and pioneering populations blend with post World War II migrant communities - German, Dutch, Italian, Greek, Philippine and Polish - and more recently arrived Vietnamese, Laotians, Albanians and Bosnians.
The best single word to define Albury is probably 'balanced'.
With a population of more than 55,000 people and a gross regional product of more than $3.7 billion, our city is large enough to provide career challenges and cosmopolitan living, yet relaxed enough to allow for plenty of family and leisure time.
We enjoy long, warm summers, mellow autumns, crisp winters and colourful springs. Whatever the season, there are endless ways to enjoy our sensational lifestyle on the Murray.
Highlights include boating, fishing and waterskiing on Lake Hume, day trips to the Victorian Alps, and short drives to award-winning wineries and historic townships.
